THE DIGITAL DARKROOM.....

Basic Needs When shooting digitally or working with digital files, there are a few basic items that you should have in your digital darkroom. A computer is the key item to any digital darkroom and, while this sounds pretty obvious, not just any computer will do. You should make sure it has several features that are optimum for working on digital files. First, is plenty of RAM. Ideally you want 512 MB or 1 GB of RAM to work efficiently. You also want a fairly large hard drive to be able to store all your photos and large scans.

Finally, your computer should be equipped with a CD or DVD writer. You will find that being able to make quick copies and creating back-ups is essential.

Your computer also needs a decent photo editing program. The most common programs are Adobe Elements and Adobe Photoshop. Both programs offer users the ability to manipulate and adjust their photos. Elements is easier to use better for the average user. While Photoshop is more geared to the professional with its extra capabilities.

Along with your computer, you also need a photo printer to be able to make quality prints of all your digital files! Both Canon and Epson make printers that are created for making photo-like prints, and some even have an ability for making archival prints. When choosing a printer, know the size you are wanting to print out and look for a six-color printer. Six-color printers have the ability to print a wider range of colors and create a more realistic image.

Other Tools of the Trade....
